RE: SLOW DOWN!!!

My worst experience, I was passed by a Dodge 3500 that was obviously chipped and modified and was towing a large 5'ver. We were in the middle of Pueblo on I-25. It was pouring rain, nearly dark and this guy was doing at least 75-80mph. I do not tow over 65, although with mountain driving on a long downhill I can hit 70 on occasion, out in the stix. I just to not to drive that way with my family along.
This guy slows down and has 5 kids in the truck, I can see 4 of them with no belts on, bouncing around in the back seat, and the youngest is held by his wife in the front passenger seat. :E He slows down enough to see me, waves bye-bye (like I am the moron), and then floors it. He blasts by me and then slides into my lane, barely clearing the front of my truck, takes about another 500 feet to get under control, and thankfully I never saw him again. Hope they are all still enjoying the lifestyle.
Many people forget that the truck is not the deciding factor towing safely, it's the last factor. The truck is the least of what can go wrong when someone decides they need to show off.

RE: Help us pick a bunkhouse 5'er

I really like the Jayco 325BHS. The Silverback BHS is also beautiful unit and probably a step up, but the Jayco is probably a classic by now. I recently got a quote on one from RV Direct, so they are still out there.

RE: Who do you like?

I do most of my services also, where I can, and to varying degrees of success. When I need help I head to Dee's RV on the southeast side of town. They are very helpful and have talked to me at length on the phone to help me resolve issues WITHOUT making an appointment. I have been in the customer service business myself for over 30 years. These guys have the commitment, sense of urgency and the talent to get all my business now. Camping World and K&C RV won't see me again.

RE: How much does it really cost to make a pickup?

Wayne, What industry was that anyway? Do they have openings or was this for buggy whips or whale bone corsets?

RE: Can I get on my roof?

I was told (quite a while ago) that if you had a ladder that was manufacturer installed, is would support up to 250 lbs on the roof. Not sure if that is for just a Fiver or not. I am about 260 and I have not even a tweak on my roof. I just repaired the skylight, My ladder is a not a model of fortitude either, but I was able to get up an down. If in doubt, a regular ladder works, too.

RE: Mini 5er Spotted

I love the picture of the guy showing how big a fish he caught in the gallery. I also thought the term referred to the hitch.

RE: Trail Ridge Rd, COLORADO?

Just wait a few minutes and the weather will change here. Suffice to say the drive is worth every moment and for us locals, we are truly blessed with the amazing handiwork of Mother Nature and her husband. Get up there and plan accordingly. This time of year expect a 40F degree change from top to bottom and dress in layers. I'm sure you heard that before, but it bears repeating. Enjoy our heaven on earth.

RE: Is this a common 'symptom' of full-timing?

It's symptom of frequent travel, nothing more. I am not a full-timer (yet), but I did travel frequently for many years, most years over 100,000 air miles. Several times I woke up not even knowing what city I was in or even how to find my bathroom. I think the later you get in at night, the higher the probability. If you haven't been a big traveler before, then this is something that you will adjust to over time.

RE: Camping lights/Decor!!!!!!

We like putting up RWB lights around holidays. They are small Christmas tree bulbs and even at night just glow, there is no shine at all. We have seen some very elaborate light schemes and the creativity can be amazing.
The only thing we object to is Wind chimes. They are usually used as a weapon and inflicted on surrounding neighbors. We really like the tubular models that are put out just before a wind storm and then the owners leave for several days so we can all enjoy the "melody". It's a total disregard for other peoples feelings and it's one reason I now carry a small sledge hammer in the back of the truck.

I second that. Now is the best time to go all year. It will be a stunning drive.

RE: Good Sam Road Service

We have had them for 3 years and just had to use them for the first time a couple weeks ago. We got stuck in some mud and the tongue weight just caused the rear of the truck to go straight down. We needed a tow. I called and they were very professional throughout the call. They called a local company to get me pulled out and let me know who and when they would show up. Sure enough, the local guy called me, got directions and we were on the way. The whole thing took under an hour. Right there they saved me more than the cost of the yearly membership fee.

RE: mileage with a diesel

I tow 10K and get about 335 miles a tank. This was hand calculated on our last trip from Saskatoon, SK to Colorado Springs, CO, a few weeks ago. Normal mileage is about 13-14 mpg towing and 19-21 mpg empty, with hitch. I try to never tow above 65 mph, except to get past 18-wheelers, or other slow vehicles on hills, usually gassers, when I have to.

RE: Lonely and down

Mike, I'm not totally surprised Ginny is being being held over and I can only imagine how you are handling the separation after so many years. It is hard to watch your better half be in pain and recover from something like this. My DW was there for four of my eight surgeries, that was it. The worst part will be two weeks from now in rehab, so be prepared.
If Ginny is really having major issues now, I would get down there as soon as you can and park in the back of hospital lot. Seems like something else is going on? It can be very painful the next day. Your place should be by her side, fighting to get her the proper attention from the nurses.
Everyone please send some prayers to Cool Mike and his wife.

PotKorn, That was actually a crude hijack from the kids room, if I remember. They were not on the actual NORAD grounds.

RE: I let the wife drive home - pulling the fiver!

On our last trip I was so tired I told the DW that we needed to pull over so I could take a nap. Either that or you drive, I told her. We had another 1,200 miles to go and we were coming down from Canada over the plains. She took over and I relaxed after about 20 minutes, as she did just fine. I took a one hour nap and woke up. She had that Ford F-350 6.0 grin all over. I asked, Did you have fun? What a truck, she said, this is just an amazing system. :B LOL, it's hard to explain TowCommand unless you actually drive it. Hmmmm, maybe now is the time to trade up? HA! Needless to say, she has a lot more confidence in her ability and I get a lot more slack when driving. Win-Win all around.

RE: Enclosed versus Open Underbelly

Mine is enclosed and here in CO, I have an extended camping season with heated tanks and the enclosed underbelly. In 10F camping, the furnace came on every 30 minutes or so. I can live with that. It also helps keep the critters out. I would not do it for an MPG increase. It's still a barn door going down the road.

RE: NORAD

Well, I've been in there quite a few times as they used to be a customer of mine. It is true that public tours are no longer offered. However, some private tours are still happening if know "someone" that can get you in. Usually that person is a VIP here in the Springs or has some pull in the Military. Not much info, but if you know someone that fits the bill (not me!) then you may have some chance of getting inside. It is still a quite impressive place.

That is just fantastic. The rehab was the most work and pain I ever went through, but 5 years later it was worth every moment. Give her a hug for me and you guys get out there and go camping in a few weeks. Talk about therapy!
